How to migrate Thunderbird to another PC?
I had a dead computer, so I put one more PC together and drove it into a new computer in my old hard drive as D. Instructions for migration in support docs leave my head scratched. Move to a new PC or move your profile folder – Thunderbird if your profile is ok and you want to move it. Most users looking for this article should read one of those articles.
Importing profile folders and transferring address books between profiles If you just want to move your folders and address book to a new profile that you create using the Profile Manager. If you do this, Thunderbird will automatically run the new account wizard, when you use the new profile for the first time. You have to add your account again, customize your settings, and then download/install an add-on. When Thunderbird requires a password, it will prompt you for it. Enter it and check the checkbox to save the password. Unless you are using add-ons like Lightning or Message Notes Plus, you probably do not have to worry about doing anything else, and there is no need to read the rest of this article.
Migrating Thunderbird to another PC
- Make sure your backup media — flash drive, external hard drive or CD is plugged in or inserted into the old computer and turned on.
2. Click on the Windows “Start” button and type the given following path in the Search field C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles Replace with your Windows account username.
3. Press “Enter.” Right-click on that folder that ends in “.default” and clicks “Copy.”
- Click “Computer” in the navigation pane on the left side. Double-click on your backup drive and search to the desired sub-folder.
- Press “Ctrl-V” to paste your data. If your backup device is a CD or DVD, you will need to click “Burn to Disc”.
- Remove the backup media when the copy process will complete, and plug or insert it into the computer where you want.
- Log in to Windows on the new computer and install Thunderbird if you have not already done so. Close Thunderbird.
- Go to the Windows “Start” button and choose “Computer.” Double-click on the backup drive and open the “default” folder.
- Press “Ctrl-A” to select the total contents of the folder. Press “Ctrl-C” to copy the contents.
- Click the Windows “Start” button and type the following in the Search field C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles Replace “” with your Windows account username.
- Press “Enter.” Double-click on the “default” folder to open it.
- Press “Ctrl-V” to paste the files from your backup If you have been asked whether you want to overwrite anything, select “Yes” in each example. When you open Thunderbird, all your email messages and settings should be intact.
